The Jazz Workshop

Each session of The Jazz Workshop meets once per week, and lasts two hours. Currently we offer sessions at the following times:

Saturday: 9:45am, Noon, 2:15pm

Tuesday: 4:00pm, 6:15pm, 8:30pm

Wednesday: 4:00pm, 6:15pm, 8:30pm

We welcome all instruments. We have sessions for all levels, from beginner to advanced, though you must meet a minimum level of proficiency - approximately two years of playing experience.

The emphasis in each session is on actually playing music. Everyone has the opportunity to play for the entire time - no sitting around waiting! We provide the music, which is carefully chosen to match the level of the student. Based on our experience, we try to pick songs that are typically played by today's jazz groups.

Each session has a maximum of five to six students. The instructor, Paul Pieper, usually plays with the students and is there to provide whatever advice and commentary is necessary about each song.

The participants in each group have an opportunity to play with the same people each week, and to develop as a group. This makes the experience that much more communal and enjoyable, we think.

We provide a drum set, a bass amp, a guitar amp, an electric piano, and a PA system that can be used to mic acoustic instruments. We have a large, comfortable space to play in. There are music stands as well. All the student needs to bring is their instrument.

We strive to provide live performance opportunities for our students, in local venues such as restaurants, coffee shops, and other suitable locations. Stay tuned for more information about these exciting opportunities.
